Accept: The Discipline of Bible Reading

While there may be some disciplines that are debatable as foundational and universal, bible reading is not an option. Consistent bible reading should not be an option in our life, regretfully it has been inconsistent to non-existent in mine at times. All sorts of excuses bubble up, no time, just reading is not enough, I must have time to explore each word and phrase so I can only read/study small amounts at a time, I read the bible all the way through once and I’m sure we can come up with many other reasons to choose to avoid this foundational necessity.

The simple fact is that you must intentionally choose to read your bible on a daily basis. For many years I fell into the trap of I get my reading through my lesson or sermon study time.  As a forecaster I will often get bogged down in micro analysis when it is actually much easier to see in macro form. The same goes with the bible as I have discovered in the past years. As an individual disciple I need to always be reading the word and allow God to talk to my through these bigger passages as a whole, not just micro analysis.

How are you doing in this essential area? Have you ever read the entire bible through in a year or less? What traps snag you? As you think about the coming year, what action will you take in reading God’s word?

These are the musings of a disciple of Christ simply trying to make sense of life by intentionally communicating with God. The intent is to give you points to ponder in 250 words or less, not closed ended teachings. React, interact and communicate with me and others as we live life intentionally and appreciate how God made each of us unique.
